Dellena Cunningham was raised in New Jersey where she completed her secondary education. She then attended Simmons College (now University) in Boston, Mass., where she received her A.B. in Psychology (With Distinction). Both her Master’s and Doctoral degrees were attained at Howard University in Washington, DC. She is a licensed Clinical Psychologist in both Washington, DC and Maryland. She has memberships in several national and local professional associations, such as the American Psychological Association, the Association of Black Psychologists and the Association of Practicing Psychologists in Montgomery and Prince George’s (Maryland) Counties.
Dr. Cunningham is a seasoned clinician who has had experience establishing and delivering a wide array of clinical services to youth and their families. As a whole, her experiences represent the myriad activities associated with the planning of long-term changes to service systems and offering treatment and support services impacting those with notable mental illness. Specifically, she has developed and administered a quality improvement plan for a government agency (DC Dept. of Mental Health). She has served as clinical director of mental health services for two Washington-area agencies. Lastly, she has developed and implemented mental health services as Director of Mental Health and Substance Abuse services for MD Juvenile Justice settings. Dr. Cunningham is a devotee of on-going training for staff and has provided, or directed the provision of same. She has directed two research-based projects and has become adroit at administering the reporting measures and other requisites of funding bodies.
In addition to agency-wide administrative responsibilities, Dr. Cunningham has supervised first-line and supervisory staff; she served as Chief Supervisory Psychologist at two area entities where she was responsible for supervising pre- and post-doctoral interns and extern, as well as those at earlier levels of training. Dr. Cunningham has taught at both undergraduate and graduate levels, conducted workshops and trainings to professional staff and organizations and has been published in APA-approved journals and other publications. She also maintains a small private practice and consultancy.
When she can, Dr. Cunningham enjoys traveling and playing golf. She is active in several community service and civic groups, such as The Links, Inc., Carrousels and DC Literary Society, to name a few.
