Andrea Wheeler is a predoctoral intern attending The Chicago School of Professional Psychology (TCSPP), an APA accredited institution, where she is pursuing her Doctor of Psychology (PsyD). She earned a Bachelor of Science degree, cum laude, in Psychology from Newman University and achieved her Master of Arts degree in Clinical Psychology in August 2020. Andrea joined CCCC to complete her APA accredited internship as part of the Mid-Atlantic Internship Consortium. Andrea will practice under the clinical supervision of Dr. Jackson Todd, Dr. Simona Efanov, and Dr. Finzi-Adams.
Andrea appreciates the differences that each client presents with; as such, she takes on an integrated approach to individualize each client’s treatment to best meet their needs. Understanding the significance of rapport and building a strong therapeutic alliance in order to achieve desired results, she places a heavy emphasis on truly empathizing with her clients in order to help them feel comfortable in opening up and having their voices heard. Andrea uses psychoeducation and implementation of psychological interventions to empower her clients to conquer the difficulties they wish to work through; she strives to achieve “aha!” moments with her clients and support them on their journey to self-awareness and -understanding.
Experience & Clinical Interests
Andrea has worked in private practices with experience in both therapy and assessment. She primarily specializes in evidence-based therapeutic practices including cognitive behavioral therapy and humanistic psychology. She additionally has interest and experience with exposure therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, interpersonal therapy, trauma-informed care, and working from the third-wave approach of schema therapy. Further, Andrea will provide couples therapy and is in the process of obtaining Gottman Level 1 certification, an empirically derived couples therapy program. She also specializes in psychological evaluations for diagnostic clarification and treatment recommendations. Andrea primarily works with adolescents and young adults with mood and/or anxiety disorders, but she has also had experience working with a wide variety of populations and presentations, including ADHD, phobias, OCD, trauma-related disorders, and personality disorders. Andrea takes a special interest in treating insomnia and earned her certification in CBT for insomnia (CBT-I). She has additional clinical interests to include sex therapy, women’s issues, group therapy, domestic violence, and family therapy.
