Objectives
CCCC offers a clinical externship (practicum) to doctoral students enrolled in a PhD or PsyD program. The practicum is 9 months long and runs from the first week of September (start date TBD based on Labor Day) until the end of June with an orientation during the last week in August. Students have the option to extend their externship through the summer if they so choose. Students accumulate over 750 total hours, and 150+ face-to-face hours.

Training Activities

The practicum position features an intermediate and/or advanced externship training experience, integrating primarily therapy hours with potential opportunities for testing. All externs are required to be at practicum (in-person or virtually as determined by CCCC) for 16-24 hours/week. The primary aim of the externship is to provide supervised training in conducting therapy, with 10-16 hours dedicated to providing direct client-contact and participating in supervision.
-
All externs are required to be on site on Friday mornings (10am - 12pm) as it is a didactic and group supervision day (in addition to clinical services that may be rendered).
-
All externs are required to see clients on at least one evening per week until 8pm.
-
All externs are required to carry a consistent caseload of 8 therapy clients per week in addition to at least two clients being treated in an adjunct treatment model (e.g., DBT Skills Training cases, Gottman Couples Therapy cases, family therapy cases, etc.).

Locations and Schedules

Trainees are typically assigned to one CCCC location, but in some cases may be expected to split their time between the DC (Eastern Market/Capitol Hill) and VA (Crystal City) locations. Schedules are determined at the beginning of the year and remain consistent throughout the semesters/academic year. Trainees will not be expected to commute between offices within the same training day. Schedules are flexible based on room availability and supervisor availability and are determined over the course of the summer prior to the start of the training year.
