Gina Sangster, LICSW

Gina Sangster is a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker who completed graduate training at the Catholic University in 1986. Prior to the Masters of Social Work degree, Gina also received a Masters of Fine Arts in writing from Columbia University in 1975. In addition to graduate studies, Gina has completed continuing education programs at the Washington School of Psychiatry and the Washington Center for Psychoanalysis.

Gina sees individual adults and couples, both straight and LGBTQ. Although she does not work with children, she brings a great deal of experience in foster care and adoption, along with personal parenting experience and knowledge of child development to help clients cope with challenges in managing multiple familial needs. Gina’s primary orientation is psychodynamic, although she will employ aspects of cognitive behavioral and solution-focused therapies.

Early in her career, Gina worked as a therapist in Northern Virginia and then shifted gears to spend more than a decade as a social worker and supervisor in the DC child welfare system. This experience forged her ongoing interest in the area of adoption. In 2012, Gina returned to clinical work where she intends to remain until retirement, a long way off!

Gina has been licensed at the clinical level in Washington, DC since 1992 and in Maryland since 2012. Gina is also board-certified as a supervisor in the State of Maryland. In addition to providing therapy, she enjoys supervising early career social workers and those who are transitioning from one area of practice to another.

Gina’s approach to therapy is interactive and dynamic. She likes to weave family history into day-to-day situations to help clients understand and appreciate the impact of early experiences on their current personal and professional lives. Gina helps people appreciate incremental change and to be kind to themselves as they move along the path toward accomplishing their goals. Gina also encourages her clients to tap into the many resources available throughout the metropolitan area. Her interest in the creative arts inspires her to inspire others to pursue their dreams.
